Emily & Marcus – part three

May 18th, 2011

Here is our third and final interview segment with Emily & Marcus from Corpus Christi, TX.

In parts one and two they discussed their dating life and some of the early challenges in their marriage. Here they go into some of the specific difficulties that being a military couple presents, and talk about their plans for the future.

Emily & Marcus Part II: The ups and downs of military marriage

May 11th, 2011

Last week we brought you part one of our interview with Emily & Marcus.

In part two, they talk about some of the difficulties they faced in their early married life as their jobs took them all over the country or, in Marcus’ case, all over the world, from Tokyo to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Part three to follow next week.

Emily & Marcus – part one

May 4th, 2011

You may have lost track, what with all the running around we’ve been doing, but we have still to give you the full interview with Marcus and Emily, whom we visited in Corpus Christi, TX back in March.

With everyone’s thoughts this week casting back to the events of 9/11, it seems eerily fitting to bring you their interview. Here, in part one, they talk about meeting, dating, getting engaged and getting married – all against the backdrop of that day and Marcus’ subsequent deployment to Iraq in 2003 in his role as a naval aviator.

As a military couple, their marriage certainly has some unique qualities – not least of which is long periods of separation. That’s something I know we would really struggle with, so we’re really interested to hear from any other couples for whom significant time apart is a factor.

Parts 2 and 3 will follow in the next two weeks.

Scenes from Corpus Christi, Texas

A couple of weeks ago, we made the Long Haul to Corpus Christi, Texas to interview Marcus and Emily Dodd. While we’re working on an edit of their interview, here are a few pictures of them, their pets and Corpus Christi:

Life in a Day: our “one thing” from SXSW

March 23rd, 2011

We ask the couples we interview to tell us “one thing” that is the secret to successful marriage. Today, we take inspiration from that and choose one favorite experience from South by Southwest.

First, let me say that South by Southwest was incredible. Exciting, inspiring, dramatic, emotional. Something has to be pretty dog-gone amazing to be our “one thing” from a trip that was full of high points.

That one thing was the documentary Life in a Day, the epic and life-affirming true story of July 24, 2010. The movie was made entirely from footage submitted via YouTube from people all across the world, which was then edited by Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald. We saw people waking up, brushing their teeth, shaving, napping, cooking, cleaning. We saw couples getting married. We saw babies being born. We saw animals dying. We saw people dying. We saw love, fear, heartbreak, vanity, anger, loneliness, relief, regret, wonderment.

It was awe-inspiring to see how much happens in one “ordinary” day and how much beauty we take for granted in the world. I don’t know when this film will be out in theaters but if you get the chance to see it, DO NOT miss it. In the meantime, here’s a preview and you can find out more about it on YouTube:

Emily & Marcus – one thing

March 21st, 2011

Last week we met up with Emily and Marcus in their adoptive home town of Corpus Christi, TX. He’s a naval pilot and she’s a regional sales manager. Both their jobs require lots of time spent away from home – and from each other.

As ever, we like to get one clip up quickly – the answer to our question “what is the one secret to a successful marriage?”

Emily and Marcus’ answer was not something we’d heard before, and we’re contemplating adopting it for ourselves. Is it important? Do you do it? Let us know below.

Looking ahead to Cults, Hesher and Allens Boots at SXSW!

March 11th, 2011

Today we leave for Texas! We’re attending the South by Southwest Festival in Austin and traveling to Corpus Christi to interview a new couple for The Long Haul Project. We’re pretty much bursting with excitement for the week ahead, and here are a few of the things we’re most looking forward to:

Seeing Cults play The Dig for Fire Lawn Party. Have you seen their incredible video starring James Franco’s little bro and Emma Roberts (niece of Julia)? It has just about everything I love most in the world: Super 8 cameras, French influences and tragic romance.

There are so many amazing movies being screened, including lots of documentaries which we’ll be attending for educational purposes. Beyond that, I’m going to make sure I get time to see my favorite actor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and recent Oscar winner Natalie Portman (how many movies has that girl made in the past year?) in Hesher. Already intrigued after seeing this clip:

We’re also very excited to re-meet Marcus and Emily Dodd, our next TLHP couple. We met Marcus and Emily at a wedding a few months ago and were very intrigued by their story: Marcus is a navy pilot and they’ve spent much of their marriage living apart while he’s been stationed in the Middle East. We’re really looking forward to learning about what makes a military marriage work.

I also can’t wait for a return trip to the legendary Allens Boots. Last year, I procured my beloved Old Gringos there and this year, we’ll be kitting Tom out cowboy style… definitely some boots and perhaps a pair of leather chaps?

My favorite footwear-- the Old Gringos

It’s going to be quite a week. Stay tuned to Twitter for plenty of updates
