Friday Frivolity: A lomo is worth a thousand words

August 19th, 2011

I feel like we’re pretty happy lately, me and Tom. Not totally perfect, still figuring it out one day at a time… but overall, pretty darn happy. And I think this picture sums it up:

Have a great weekend! We’re planning to do more stuff that involves lying in the sunshine while we still can!

Friday Frivolity: Things I MUST do with my husband this summer

July 8th, 2011

I’m very busy right now. I mean B-U-S-Y. Every time I think I’ve reached the absolute apex of busy-ness, I somehow manage to get busier. And it’s summer and finally (mostly) warm outside and I want to be doing fun things with my husband. So I figured if I write them down here then somehow, some way, we’ll find time to do all these fun things and I won’t spend the entire month on a plane or in a lonely hotel room (mega sad face).

So here’s my list, interpreted through the medium of lomography:

1. A day at the beach
I can’t believe that it’s July and we haven’t been to the beach yet.  And it’s greenback season so now there’s no hope of Crane’s and the Clam Shack until August.

2. Take a long bike ride
This was a major pastime of last summer, but another casualty of our current, too-hectic weekends. I’m aiming for Castle Island or the Arboretum. Or we could combine points 1. and 2. and take a bike ride on Plum Island, followed by the beach!

3. Eat ice cream
So far this summer, we managed to share one, quick Pinkberry but it was on the way to shoot a wedding. I’m talking a big old ice cream cone, preferably consumed in the park or…. on a beach.

4. Go kayaking
There is such a lovely place near where my brother lives in Melrose. It’s peaceful, beautiful and relaxing and we’ve promised ourselves we’d go for three summers in a row. Still, nothing– though I did manage to get my brother to take me last year.

5. Picnic!
I’m talking with a checked blanket, traditional basket, loaf of french bread and maybe even some deviled eggs.  All in. I don’t have a lomo depicting this type of adventure, but I really, really want to have a picnic this summer with Tom somewhere along the lines of here…

Or here…

OK universe, I’ve put my wishes out there. To quote my good friend Meghan Davidson: DO YOUR THING! I hope you have a happy weekend full of sunshine, ice cream, picnics and spending time with someone you love.

Love and Lomography – we’re LomoAmigos!

April 13th, 2011

We’ve been into Lomography for a long time. For the uninitiated, Lomography is the art of using cheap, plastic film cameras with plastic lenses to take incredible photographs.

It started in Vienna with a cache of old Soviet military cameras, continued with new manufacture of classic designs, and has expanded to a global phenomenon, with Lomography gallery stores in many of the world’s hippest and most important cities. Still no Boston store, but we live in hope.

We have a lot of lomo cameras. Melissa has the Diana F+ – and with a bewildering array of lenses and accessories - while I mainly shoot on the Smena 8M, a genuine CCCP camera. We also have a Sprocket Rocket which takes panoramic pictures that use every possible bit of the film, and the ActionSampler, which shoots four shots in quick succession.

So you can imagine our delight when Lomography invited us to become LomoAmigos – friends of Lomography, with our work showcased in their online magazine, and putting us in illustrious company. Other LomoAmigos include Elijah Wood, Neil Gaiman, David Arquette and others.

We started off with an introductory interview (read it here), featuring some of our best lomos from the past couple of years, and introducing Lomography fans to The Long Haul Project.

Going forward, we’re going to be writing a monthly entry for the magazine, which we’ve decided will be called Love and Lomography and will combine our love of analogue photography with our ongoing TLHP work. We’ve already published our first post, which you can find here.

We obviously hope that this opportunity will open up the project to a whole new audience of people – welcome, lomographers! - but most of all we’re deeply thrilled to have been asked to participate in this way. The pressure is now on for us to produce enough interesting photos each month to accompany our posts. And no, we’re not going to cheat and use Instagram.

Happy birthday to Mom!

March 28th, 2011

We’d like to send special birthday wishes to Mother Morris today, who barely looks a day older than when this picture was taken:

It's my Mom- Not a promotional still for the upcoming series of Mad Men

Wish we could be with you to celebrate! Happy birthday and much Long Haul Project love.

Here are a few pictures from our autumn excursions, mainly spent in the New’s (York and Hampshire) and taken with our Diana and Schmena lomos. Enjoy!

Life thru a lens

November 5th, 2010

My wife is going to kill me: for scheduling a second blog post in a day, for using the title of a Robbie Williams album as said blog post’s title, and for publicly gushing about her.

But I just wanted to give her some props for the fabulous Lomo shots she’s been producing lately. Her early efforts with her Diana were…. a little underwhelming, but recently she’s been shooting some crazy cool stuff and I would like to share some of it here.

What we did on our summer vacation

September 7th, 2010

Labor Day has come and gone. We’re into September. Kids are back in school. Summer is officially over.

The one consolation is what a fun summer it was. We traveled, caught up with old pals, made new friends, ate good food, went to the beach, heard lots of great music. I’d venture to say, and I hope Tom would agree, that it’s been our best summer yet.

Here are a few of the high points, captured on our lomos…

Field in Oxfordshire, UK

The Old North Bridge, Concord, MA

BBQ boys

Zakim Bridge, Boston, MA

Kayaking, Spot Pond, Melrose, MA

Oqunquit Beach, Maine

Quadruple vision, Oqunquit, ME

A snapshot of Meghan and Tony

July 26th, 2010

So we planned to edit a teaser of the Meghan and Tony interview this weekend.

But then we were distracted by kayaking, guitar building, eating out at one of our favorite restaurants, a pizza party with friends, bike riding, dog walking and going to see Inception.

We weren’t completely indolent, however, and did scan our Lincoln, Nebraska lomography. The beauty of lomography is that old-fashioned thrill of not knowing how your shots come out until they’re developed. The downside is when they don’t come out well: Tom and I have both managed to overexpose entire rolls and I accidentally took 3 rolls of Dianas on the pinhole setting. The prints looked like something Monet might have churned out after 6 bottles of wine.

Happily, we got some great lomography in Lincoln including lovely shots of Meghan and Tony at home. So until we get off our lazy behinds and do some editing, enjoy a few stills from our weekend:
