Before Kate and John’s wedding, my enduring memory of Plimoth Plantation was a 5th grade field trip on a crisp autumn day. The air smelled of smoke from the wood-burning stoves. A woman dressed in Pilgrim garb taught us how to churn butter. I thought that was a pretty cool skill, though I haven’t had the opportunity to put it to use again. I was surprised to discover that Plimoth Plantation offers more than just the chance for an authentic Pilgrim experience, it also boasts a beautiful tented reception venue at the bottom of a sun-drenched hill, with a view that takes in a serene lake and miles of unspoiled forest. Yup, pretty gorgeous. And I didn’t spot anyone churning butter this time (gotta’ admit, I was kinda bummed).
Plimoth Plantation was the location for the wedding of Kate and John– also know as Chowder to his friends, on account of his once having lived in California, where native Bostonians were a fascinating curiosity. Their wedding day had to be one of the most perfect Saturdays of the summer– blue skies, bright sunshine and low humidity lured us on to Green Harbor beach to do some filming before the ceremony at Our Lady of Assumption church. On a personal note, I had so much fun hanging out with the flower girls in the morning who were completely fascinated by my camera and did a lot of “assisting” for me. We definitely have some budding cinematographers in that group of young ladies. They’re all a bit young for an internship, but I’ll be keeping my eyes out for them…
Even after all the weddings I’ve filmed, I always feel nervous when we start the day. We walk in to the biggest day of someone’s life, meet a whole bunch of their important family and friends and immediately start filming them. It can be a little weird for people to get used to and sometimes I can sense a few jitters. Not so with Kate, Chowder and their families. We got the world’s warmest welcome from them and within minutes, we felt like we had known everyone in the wedding party for years. Kate and Chowder are such happy, positive, welcoming and open people and it’s clear that’s because they’re surrounded by family and friends who are exactly the same.
Thank you Kate & John for inviting us to capture your wedding day and best wishes for a lot of wonderful and happy years ahead of you!
