Today is Melissa’s birthday. Do me a favor and wish her a happy birthday in the comments below. She’ll like that.
The funny thing about Melissa’s birthday is that, coming as it does at the end of the year, it’s always an obvious time to reflect on the 12 months that have just passed. Famously within our household, on her 30th, I asked Melissa what, over the course of the preceding year, had been her biggest source of pride. She burst into tears and that, in some existential sense, was the very beginning of the journey that brought us to the point where we’re running our own business as filmmakers.
Well, this birthday is extra special, because this was the year Melissa came into her own. She faced the biggest challenges of her life, stepped furthest out of her comfort zone, and excelled in ways that she could never have expected. She swam, rather than sank, and soared high into the air on her own wings.
As proud as I have been to stand beside over the last year, I can’t wait to see what she does next.

You’re the best husband ever! Thanks for always being here to celebrate with me, even when it’s pouring with rain, a blizzard, I’m being a brat, I’m sick, I’m crying. You’ve given me many, many happy birthday memories, from the surprise of Frost/Nixon in the West End to fighting through 12 inches of snow to get to see Somewhere. You’re the best gift ever. Of course, don’t take that to mean you shouldn’t buy me other gifts….
