Those who know me in real life, and in blog life, know that I have struggled to get in the Christmas spirit in previous years. But this year, I promised my long-suffering husband that I was going to make more of an effort. And when I say I’m going to do something, I do it.
I went all out. A 9-foot Christmas tree, all-new disco decorations, fairy lights everywhere, piles of mince pies, non-stop Christmas music, White Christmas on the DVD player…. and a partridge in a pear tree. Oh, I embraced Christmas like it only comes once a year….
Probably the best little holiday tradition that helped me get through the season with good mood intact was “The 12 Dates of Christmas”. Basically, the idea is to plan 12 festive dates during December. I discovered a couple of my favorite bloggers doing it, and thought it was a great idea. What could make me feel less grinchy then going on lots of dates?
So all month, Tom and I found fun things to do, from decorating the tree to baking cinnamon rolls to long walks with the dog to scheduling a mid-week lunch date. Slightly cheesy? Ok, yes. But very un-Grinch like and so great for our marriage. As the big day approaches, I feel relaxed, well-rested and ready for the onslaught of relatives and parties and presents and cleaning and cooking that lie ahead.
It’s been a minor Christmas miracle. I’ve had a George Bailey moment and realized it really is a wonderful life, and all that jazz. As much as I doubted I could do it, kicking the Grinch out this holiday season has been well worth the effort. I have a happier husband and it’s been much more fun to not be miserable and grumpy. Seriously, it’s true.
So have yourself a merry little Christmas (or whatever it is you may celebrate) and I hope you’re able to make the most of the season.

So happy you are feeling less Grinch-y and that Tom is happy that your happy. xoxo
